website crashes as panicked customers check if their washing machine is at risk of fire

A website set up to show which Hotpoint or Indesit washing machines are faulty has crashed as thousands of worried customers attempted to find out whether their model was at risk of catching fire.

The site – https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk/ – is experiencing “technical problems”.

Customers that want to check whether their machine is affected are being told to call the British call centre on 0800 316 1442, or if in the Republic of Ireland should call 0818 903 281. However, when the Telegraph called the phone line was also down.

A statement on the website read: “We deeply apologise for the delay and concern this has caused. We will continue to update everyone through our social media channels and we thank you for your patience.”

Yesterday, Whirlpool was forced to recall more than half a million of the washing machines over concerns they posed a fire risk, after a flaw with the door-locking system was discovered.
